Taking care of your teeth and gums means dedicating a few minutes every day to oral hygiene habits, and being aware of the foods you eat. This is a fairly simple process, and can easily be achieved by anyone who wants a great smile!

First, brush and floss your teeth. You should brush twice a day, for 2 minutes each time. Just think “2×2” and you’ll have it down. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle pressure, with short, back-and-forth strokes. When flossing, use a slow, even sawing motion to prevent cutting gums. Floss once a day. It doesn’t matter whether you brush first or floss first, as long as they both get done.

Second, watch the foods you eat. If you choose to eat sticky, starchy, or sugary foods every once in awhile, be sure to brush and floss extra thoroughly that day. Consider chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after eating, to encourage saliva flow. Saliva is your body’s first defense against cavities.

Third, drink lots of water. Not only is this good for your overall health, but it helps keep your mouth clean by removing food particles and debris from your mouth. Plain or fluoridated water is best. It’s tempting to put a twist of citrus into your water, but try using other, less acidic fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The prolonged exposure to acid can be damaging to your teeth.
